Excerpt from interview.....
Rhonda Anderson---"You were
raised in a traditional Jewish religion. Your back ground is scientific and
academic. Your are a psychiatrist who presently chairs the Mount Sinai
Medical Center in Miami. Then a new client came into your office and changed
your life. Will you share that experience with us?"
Brian Weiss M. D. ---"Yes,
Rhonda. That was the first time for me that I encountered anybody having past
lives times. I did not believe in this. I was very skeptical! About all of
parapsychology, things that I could not see. I was trained very traditionally at
Columbia University, Yale University School of Medicine, Professor at the
University of Pittsburgh, Professor at University of Miami, Chairman of
Psychiatry; all of these titles, many book chapters and scientific papers; but this
person taught me more than any of the other courses. Catherine is what I call
her in Many Lives Many Masters, a catholic woman in her late twenties. She was
suffering from panic attacks and phobias, fears, nightmares. I used hypnosis to
take her back to her into childhood to find the traumas that I felt were
causing her current symptoms. She was a good subject, she went deeply but she
was not getting any better. One particular day deep in the hypnotic trance state
I told her to go back to from which her symptoms first arose thinking she
would go back to childhood.. Instead, she
flipped back about four thousand years. It was very, very surprising!
Rhonda---laughing "It must
have been very bizarre for you!"
Brian---"It was very bizarre.
Well, I thought maybe imagination or fantasy, I didn’t know. It was very odd for her
to be doing this. I had been treating her for over a year, conservatively, with
talking psychotherapy. Really, without much progress. But she didn’t
hallucinate, she was not psychotic, she did not use substances; there was no
reason for this. She went back four thousand years, had a different body,
different face, different hair, a different name in a desert type of typography.
We went through the lifetime drowning in a flood or a tidal wave. Her baby being
torn from her arms by the force of the water. She doesn’t have any children in
her current life.
Rhonda---"Please go on"
Brian---" Then she floated
above, finding a beautiful light, refreshing herself, renewing herself. Much
like the near death experience work of Dr. Raymond Moody and Dr. Elizabeth
Kubler Ross and others. But she told me she had never heard of these people. She
had two other lifetimes that first session that we did this. She was a Greek
woman a few hundred years later and a Spanish prostitute in the 1700's. She then
awakened and almost immediately, her lifelong fear of gagging or choking was
better. Now I knew imagination or fantasy does not cure symptoms like this so it
did not quite fit. But yet I was so skeptical, so left brain, so Ivy league
trained that I couldn't accept that it was past life times. So it took more than
that to convince me.
Rhonda---"So how long did it
take to convince you? Months?"
Brian---"About the fifth or
sixth session and by the way, I had done this work with more than one thousand
people since Catherine."
Rhonda ---"Wow!"
Brian---But it took me a while. With
Catherine something even stranger happened. It was the oddest thing to me. We
were doing this work again, because she was getting better and whether I
believed in it or not, it was working."
Rhonda---"It was working!"
Brian---"So I was still doing
it. She floated above her body in a death after a middle ages lifetime. Finding
the light again, she announced to me that there were two people there to see
me my father and my son. I knew she knew nothing about me. I don't even have
diplomas hanging in the office because one theory in psychotherapy is you don't
tell your patients about yourself, you want them to project only their thoughts
and feelings into the arena .She wasn't an investigative journalist, she didn't
have unlimited funds to hire the FBI or anything. She was a laboratory
technician in the hospital. She said there were two people there to see me, my
father and my son. She said your fathers' name is Abram. That is how she
pronounced it. She didn't say Abraham, remember she's Catholic from New
England.
Rhonda----"Yes, Okay."
Brian---Catherine said
" "He died from his heart and your daughter is named after him. And
your son is here and he is very, very tiny and shinning brightly his heart it is
important also because it is turned around like a chicken's heart."
Rhonda---"Very
Interesting, please continue."
Weiss---She went on to say,
among other things, his death was important for to pushed me back into
psychiatry. This was very shocking for me because I knew she could not possibly
know these things..my fathers' Hebrew name Abraham, just as she had said it. But
nobody knew this. My best friends did not know this. He was called Reds because
of his hair color. He did die of a heart attack, she was right about that. My
daughter born a few months after that he died, was indeed named after him. So
she knew that too. My first child, a son, had died at twenty-three days of age
of a very, very, rare congenital heart defect, something called Total Anomalous
Pulmonary Venous Drainage, but basically what it is, the blood vessels are
coming into the wrong side of the heart; as if it is turn around. She was right
about that too. This defect occurs once in every ten million births, no place to
look it up. It pushed me back into psychiatry because I was thinking about
staying in Internal Medicine. In our grief and despair I was reminded of the
power of the mind; of why I was interested in psychiatry in the first place. So,
I thought if she is right about all things, no place to look them up could she
right about the past lives as well? This was the beginning for me.
